As a mother, I stand with you and your priorities for your children
After 15 years as an educator, I understand what schools want and need
I know how to manage a team & budget and work for the good of others
I grew up in Bend, I'm a small business owner and a proud Central Oregonian
My greatest motivation for committing my time to the School Board is my own daughter. By running for School Board, I have the opportunity to bring my deep experience and passion for education to the community where my kids will go to school.
I want for my own children what every parent wants - a school experience that will prepare them to be happy and successful in life. Unfortunately, that is harder than it sounds. I bring a deep and nuanced understanding of schools that can help the Board meet this goal for all of Bend-La Pine's students.
I was incredibly lucky to grow up in Bend and to attend schools that set me on the path to happiness and professional success. After graduating from the University of Portland with my teaching degree, I joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and was sent to Boston to teach in a school across from the largest housing project in the Northeast. I came face to face with a level of poverty and failing schools that I had never imagined growing up in Bend.
For the past 15 years, I have dedicated my career to improving educational outcomes for the students and families who need our advocacy the most, and I currently help lead a national nonprofit dedicated to closing the achievement gap in 25 large cities across the country. I have had the privilege of visiting hundreds of schools, including some of the worst and some of the best public schools in our country.
With my local and national experience and with degrees in education and business, I am uniquely positioned to help lead our community into the future. I have been a national leader in the effort to reimagine schools that better serve the needs of tomorrow’s economy. I have been a leader in the effort to understand how to personalize learning for students. And I am currently leading a national effort to shine a light on schools and cities that are closing the achievement gap. I’m excited to bring my passion for future-ready students to Bend.
I have managed several $100 million+ budgets in addition to our current Bend-La Pine Schools budget. From 2007-2012, during the last recession, I was responsible for the HR budget for a California school system with 36 schools, during which time our school performance improved every year despite budget cuts. I also won and managed a $100 million 5-year grant to redesign teacher recruitment, career ladders, evaluation, and retention strategies, with the requirement that any new strategies be sustainable on public funding at the end of the grant.
I'm a Bend native and proud graduate of the Bend-La Pine school system via Jewell Elementary, Cascade Middle School and Bend Senior High School. My husband is also from Bend and is a graduate of Mountain View High School. We are small business owners in Central Oregon and we credit our high quality of life to this amazing community and the quality of our education that built our foundation for a lifetime of learning. We strive to give back whenever possible and want to help provide a world class education for not only our daughter, but for all children in the Bend-La Pine School District.
I am a Board Member and Event Manager for TEDxBend, Co-owner of Cascade Relays (producing Cascade Lakes Relay and Bend Beer Chase), and President of the Cascade Relays Foundation Board, which supports 25 local non-profits in Bend and La Pine.
